Netflix Is A Joke: Trevor Noah (+ Wil Sylvince)
I hate that one of the most impressive minds that I’ve encountered is attached to a person far removed from me but…
‘Twas a joy to make it to yet another comedy show by the brilliantly talented and honest wordsmith, Trevor Noah.
What’s amazing to me is the way that, the show that I saw at the Paramount Theater in Seattle was nothing like the show that I got at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.
How had this amazing man experienced so much life between March and May that he’d reshaped his entire show? And how had he done it so well, so quickly?
Fine fine. We could chuck this up to it being his job but no, it’s definitely deeper than that! He clearly takes time, care and solicitude when it comes to what he does in all spaces that he does it! That isn’t born overnight.
You see, these are the types of minds that inspire creativity and change.
They also feel so rare nowadays… This truth has been disheartening for me. I’ve truly had to travel each month to experience the types of creativity and the varying minds that I want in my everyday life. Now, I plan to do a separate post on that because it truly works!
Setting out to meet different people who meet the needs and goals that I set for this year is actually working. I’ve taken 5 trips this year and I’ve met inspirational and influential people who have helped my creativity or my career on 4 of the 5 trips. That’s absolutely impressive. And it shows that my little vow and steps towards sanguinity are not being taken in vain.
Let’s get this out of the way because apparently I’ll have to do this every time:
If a performer for a show that you’ve paid to be at says, “No phones, please no pictures/videos”, then why would you not listen?
I knew that the no-phones message was coming because I had been at the Seattle show (and within the second row where my phone was ringing off the hook and I couldn’t reach it). For me, however, this was super embarrassing and not on purpose. I did everything I could to clandestinely reach into my bag and silence my phone, but it just kept going. Luckily, Trevor was polite about it but I know that he noticed because it’s like my ringer was magically getting louder each time.
But at this showTrevor had to keep repeating himself because people just had to get a picture or video of him. I commend him for remaining polite and simply saying, “okay guys let’s put our phones away. I feel that we’ve forgotten the joy of just living in the moment. Let’s be in the moment here.” He approaches this nicely and provides a reason as to why and yet y’all are still compelled to capture something for your social media rather than being respectful (and apparently the jokes about that exact thing are lost on y’all!).
WHY PAY TO GO TO A SHOW TO DISRESPECT THE PERSON YOU PAID TO SEE?
I’m flummoxed!
From this, however, I’ve noticed that a lot of people pay to go to his shows but truly don’t listen to who he tells us he is as a person. You don’t listen to his views. You don’t listen to the tidbits that you get as it pertains to his mindset and it’s odd. I know that you haven’t met a mind like his and yet you sit in his face and take the opportunity for granted anyway. I’ll never understand you guys.
Anyway, back to the show! I’m not going to talk about the content of the show for Wil or Trevor because it may end up on the special, but I will say that I just cannot believe that I get to live in a world where I can witness what it is that I want in a person who graces my circle in real time and in the flesh: a thinker, a doer, a worker… He is everything that I’ve set out to be and prided myself on being as an adult and everything that I want to be surrounded by. I haven’t yet determined if it’s more helpful to know that this type of person exists just so that I’ll know that I’m not asking for the impossible or if it’s more harmful to know that they exist but I just don’t know one.
Anywho, both of these gentlemen came with the stuff! They knew that we wanted to be there and to laugh and they did not disappoint. The Hollywood Bowl was filled with people and we all joined together for a packed night, to laugh and just to be. It was really beautiful.
I’ve gravitated to comedy more within the past year thanks to my fellow Bay Area screenwriting friend, Artie, so it’s so cool that I’m getting to go to all of these venues and see, in real time, how comedy brings people together and just makes them feel good.
I mean, overall Trevor, thanks for the feels. Keep being your amazing self.
Best,
Bree 💙
