Book Review: 2024... The Year of More

2024… The Year of More by Noah William Smith

In terms of books and genres, self-help may be at the top of my list. I love reading a book that will inspire me, motivate me, change my perspective or give me a book recommendation that I can hand along to a client in need. This is, in large part, why I’ve decided to give newer, indie author, Noah William Smith’s book, “2024… The Year of More”, a read.

Content

People come to the self-help genre for exactly that — help with “self”. Whether that applies to relational self, professional self, personal self or boundary-setting self, they explore the genre for little trinkets that they can take home and add to their collections (kind of like vintage shopping where you acquire a new piece and just want to stare at it instead of wear it).

What I enjoyed about this book was the fact that the reader is consistently presented with little nuggets that, sure we’ve heard time and time again, but when we read them with the acknowledgment that we’re in a self-help/motivated mental space, then we’re way more likely to be open to the information and to apply it.

This book, at least, opens or re-opens your mind to sayings or thoughts that are worth visiting while in a ‘motivated for change’ state of mind. They’re also largely presented within the personal context of the Author’s past experiences and anecdotes. I don’t know about you, but I love a book that gets just the right amount of personal.

Structurally

One area that I truly think this book could use more attention is on the structure.

Some sections within this book seemed to handle structure fairly well. I mean, it has a lovely holiday section that largely talked about the holidays affecting “self” overall! But, other sections of this book were tangential which could easily leave a reader out in the woods alone with little understanding of what’s happening.

Personally, I don’t think that the structure would completely turn many people away from this book but the book could become so much more applicable if, structurally, it took you down the path instead of taking you through the maze.

An Answer From The Author:

The author graciously provided additional insight that I believe truly adds light to the structure conversation:

Just a quick note on the unique book structure. It was a risky move to give it a maze-like feel (it is so different from familiar and logical structures), but that was deliberate. The randomness of some thoughts in the book can hopefully surprise and inspire the reader to think broadly. New solutions and thoughts may come to light in their life, and replace familiar ones that no longer serve them.”

As someone who equally believes in being a “first” and in using different means to reach different ends, I truly love this. Especially now that I have a deeper understanding of the why behind the structure, I can easily love it for what it is!

Something that could be super enjoyable for the journaling journeyer in your life could be the fact that each page poses many questions that you can either mentally respond to or physically fill in as you read. While this was a bit too much of an inquisition for me, this could totally appeal to the vast majority of people out there who enjoy the way and the timing in which the questions are posed throughout the book.

This book totally gives off a journal-prompt feel that’s sure to appeal to the masses.

As a therapist who encourages written mediums to clients (whomever it’s authentic to, not a one-size-fits-all), this book could easily make it onto my referral list.
